PUDUCHERRY: Three Primary Health Centres (PHC) in Puducherry will soon be upgraded to Community Health Centres (CHC) under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Director of Health Dilip Kumar Baliga told reporters on Friday. The PHCs at Bahour, Vizhidiyur and T.R. Pattinam in Karaikal would be upgraded to CHCs. Surgical facilities for once a month including general surgery, ophthalmology, tubectomy would be established at the PHCs at Nettapakkam, Villianur and Kirumampakkam. “This will ease the rush at the government hospitals,” Dr. Baliga said. To create awareness of sterilisation among men, there were plans to soon introduce health education in the evenings. “Our health workers will visit places where men get together in the villages to talk to them about non-scalpel vasectomy,” Mission Director C.K. Revathy said. At present, the institutional deliveries in the Union Territory was 98 per cent, with maternal and child care being one of the main priorities of the programme. Infant Mortality Rate was 28 per 1,000 births now, she said. HIV testingAfter testing around 66,000 people for HIV in the last three to four months, the department found 0.5 per cent of them HIV positive, Dr. Baliga said As part of a plan to evolve a sample for the 10 lakh population of Puducherry, the department aimed at screening one lakh people for HIV. Persons below the age of 16 and above 60 years had been left out, he added.
