Belgaum
Belgaum: There is only one woman candidate among the 18 to be fielded by the Janata Dal(S) in as many Assembly constituencies in Belgaum district. According to district Janata Dal(S) president Ashok Pujari here on Friday, the party had decided to field a woman candidate to contest from among the 18 constituencies. That apart, the party had decided to field one Muslim candidate. However, he did not disclose the constituencies from where these candidates would contest. He said 75 aspirants had submitted their applications for party ticket. They were four Muslims, 16 Scheduled Castes, 22 Scheduled Tribes and six women. The party was collecting Rs. 5,000 from each applicant belonging to general category and Rs. 2,500 from those belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes categories. He said all the applications would be taken up for review on April 13. The final list would be sent to the State unit to enable it to take the final decision. About the criteria for selection, he said the major criteria would be “winnability” of a candidate. On the question of merit, he said “winnability” of candidates would continue to be the major criteria in all parties.
