Scheme aims at minimising migration of people

Eligible persons will be given photo identity card free

of cost

Krishnagiri: The District Rural Development Agency has asked those who have volunteered to work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and were given identity cards to open savings bank account for depositing the wages.

The scheme was launched in the district on April 1 and the agency was registering persons seeking employment in all the villages, according to a Collectorate release. The scheme was aimed at enhancing the livelihood security of households in rural areas, by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in each financial year to every household.

The scheme also aims to minimise the migration of people from the rural areas to urban parts in search of employment and empower the rural poor.

The government had directed the agency to pay the wages earned by a person to his or her bank account. The person can open the account in any nearby nationalised bank branch. A person can also open a joint account, including the other family members, who received identity cards under the scheme.

Persons seeking employment under the scheme should submit a written application or express their interest in person to the respective panchayat president.

Eligible persons will be given photo identity card free of cost. Photographs will also be taken free of cost facilitating the persons to register for work. More information can be obtained from the agency, the release added.
