dated April 12, 1958: Neutral belt in Europe

Labour Party and Trades Union Congress leaders at a meeting in London on April 10 agreed on the broad lines of a policy statement on disengagement in Europe, according to usually reliable sources. The meeting was called for further talks on the general question of disarmament and the suspension of Hydrogen Bomb tests. The “agreement” was believed to be a general approach to the problem of disengagement, visualising the withdrawal of foreign forces from a central area in Europe, including East and West Germany. There would be a neutral belt subject to international control and inspection. Nuclear weapons would be banned in the area.
