Big win for Pakistan XI

Principal Correspondent

Hyderabad: Pakistan XI recorded an emphatic, nine-wicket win over World XI to begin its campaign in style in the ICL 20s World Series at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here on Thursday.

Chasing 131, the Pakistan outfit romped home thanks to Imran Nazir (69, 62b, 9x4, 1x6) and Abdul Razzaq (55 n.o., 42b, 3x4, 3x6).

The openers came up with some flamboyant strokes. First, Razzaq lofted Johan van der Wath over long-on and then Man-of-the-Match Nazir pulled the same bowler over square-leg. The two continued their assault to put on 119 runs in 16.1 overs.

None of the bowlers including Michael Kasprowicz, Andrew Hall or van der Wath could make any impression.

Earlier, World XI put up a disappointing batting display to be restricted to a paltry 130 for nine in 20 overs as the Pakistani bowlers stuck to the basics.

The pick of them being, off-spinner Arshad Khan (three for 24), who used his height well. After being hit for a huge six over long-on, Arshad Khan deceived the hard-hitting World XI captain Chris Cairns, and had him caught off the leading edge.

World XI flattered to deceive after a rousing start which saw 40 runs being scored in five overs. But, once Shahid Nazir got rid off Elliott (14), the World XI collapsed.

The scores: World XI 130 for nine in 20 overs (Abdur Razzaq two for 29, Shahid Nazir two for 12, Naved-ul-Hasan Rana two for 21, Arshad Khan three for 24) lost to Pakistan XI 131 for one in 17.3 overs (Imran Nazir 69, Abdul Razzaq 55 n.o.).
