KOCHI: Kerala’s volleyball family got together at the Rajiv Gandhi here on Saturday evening with former and current players playing matches against each other. Some of best from the current bunch, including Tom Joseph, R. Rajiv and Kishore combined with stars of yesteryear like Cyril Valloor and Abdul Nazar and S.A. Madhu, and played matches against each other. “This is just a start,” said former international Moideen Naina. “The old timers are often forgotten, we don’t even get to see them, so we thought of arranging a meeting.” More than a hundred players landed in Kochi and nearly 400 are expected to attend Sunday’s get-together which will include players’ families too. “We will also get to meet the young players, we can share our experience, even help out players who are in financial need,” said Cochin Port Trust former Indian captain Raj Vinod. S. Gopinath, a star from Jimmy George’s days and now the DIG, Crime Branch in Thiruvananthapuram, was one of the main men behind the idea. Now Kerala has been divided into three zones with the entire lot planning to meet at least once a year. — Principal Correspondent
