GULBARGA: Traffic on Thinthani bridge across the Krishna in Surpur taluk was suspended on Friday following the “damage” noticed in the end span of the bridge. According to reports received here, the damage to the pedestal in the end span of the bridge, which connected Gulbarga and Bidar districts with the rest of the State, was noticed in the afternoon. Subsequently, traffic on the bridge was suspended. A large number of people were stranded because of this. A senior official of the Public Works Department, who visited the spot, told The Hindu that the damage appeared to be minor and the decision to suspend traffic on the bridge had been taken as a precautionary measure. The official said experts from Bangalore would arrive at Thinthani on Saturday to inspect the damage. The reports said that the police allowed light vehicles on the bridge late in the evening on the suggestions from PWD officials. Heavy vehicles were being diverted via Hattigudur to Deodurg in Raichur district. The police were keeping a vigil on the bridge and had installed focus lights.
