Ms. Dikshit urges Health officials to implement new projects Seven more hospital projects in an advanced stage of completion NEW DELHI: The first liver transplant operation at the 155-bed Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences that would be commissioned at Vasant Kunj here in August this year is expected to be performed around Independence Day. Already four operation theatres have become ready at the hospital and another two operation theatres for liver transplant are nearing completion. Apart from this super-specialty hospital, seven more hospital projects of the Delhi Government are in an advanced stage of completion, four new projects have been sanctioned, 14 projects are in the planning stage and the 15 hospital projects have been completed during the last five years, a review meeting of the Health and Family Welfare Department chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and attended among others by Health Minister Yoganand Shastri, Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta and Principal Secretary (Health) Vivek Rae was informed on Thursday. During the meeting, Ms. Dikshit exhorted the officials of the Department to start implementing the new major health projects including the 750-bed Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Super-specialty Hospital at Dwarka, the 200-bed hospital at Kokiwala Bagh and the Nursing School Building in GTB Hospital. The foundation stone of the Dwarka hospital is expected to be laid in May and a medical college would also be developed in the complex. The Chief Minister also underlined the need for proper maintenance of government hospitals and announced that plans were afoot to deploy full-time dedicated staff for maintenance work that would directly report to the medical superintendents concerned. She also directed the officials to prioritise opening of new dispensaries in those unauthorised colonies that are due to be regularised soon. Better serviceStating that 187 dispensaries were providing OPD services in the city, Ms. Dikshit said 10 more would be added in 2008-09. Besides, recruitment of doctors, nurses and other para-medical staff would be speeded up to overcome shortage of staff. And while 300 doctors would be appointed on contract over the next two months, 500 medical personnel are also being recruited on routine basis. Besides, 300 nurses have been appointed on contract in GTB Hospital. The Chief Minister also reviewed the process of issue of smart cards under Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna. At the meeting, attended by Labour Minister Mangat Ram Singhal, it was informed that 92,000 Antyodaya families would initially be issued smart cards by May 31. Also 367,000 BPL families would be entitled to avail themselves of the benefit of the scheme by contributing a premium of Rs.30 per year per family of five persons. Free treatmentAs part of the scheme, 91 private nursing homes and hospitals have also been selected to provide free treatment of 725 specified diseases up to and expenditure of Rs.30,000 per year to these card holders.
