“In-principle nod for electrification extension work”

CHENNAI: The Planning Commission has given approval in principle for extension of electrification of broad gauge line from Madurai to Tuticorin/Nagercoil. The project cost will be Rs. 146 crore.
Addressing media persons here on Friday, Minister of State for Railways R.Velu said once the project was executed the entire BG line from Chennai to Tuticorin/Nagercoil would have electric traction. At present electrification work was going on between Villupuram and Tiruchi, and the work would be completed before this year-end.
In the next phase, electrification of Tiruchi-Madurai BG would be taken up.
Reviews projects
The Minister, who reviewed the progress of various on-going projects with officials here, said in the current year it had been targeted to complete the gauge conversion of Villupuram–Mayiladuthurai, Vellore–Villupuram, Podanur–Coimbatore and Nagapattinam–Velankanni and Karaikudi–Manamadurai sections and doubling of Irgur–Coimbatore, Madurai–Dindigul, and Tiruvallur–Arakkonam third line.
