More water for the Capital soon

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Capital is likely to have an improved water supply over the next couple of months. The Delhi Jal Board claims that Delhi will have an additional 20 million gallons a day (MGD) of water from the soon-to-be commissioned recycling units and better distribution of water in several parts of South Delhi with the commissioning of the Kailash Master Balancing Reservoir.

According to Jal Board officials, water recycling plants at Wazirabad and Bhagirathi that will be commissioned in May will add 20 MGD of water to the existing supply. “These recycling plants will augment the water supply not just in their own command areas but also in some nearby places,” says Jal Board Chief Executive Officer Arun Mathur.

While the plant at Bagirathi will serve areas on its command, water supply from the plant at Wazirabad will be extended to nearby areas including some unauthorised colonies. According to Mr. Mathur, several hundred unauthorised colonies have been identified where pipelines to carry water will be laid in the near future.

Water from the recycling plants is expected to reduce the city’s dependence on other sources. “With construction of recycling plants at the existing water treatment plants at Haiderpur, Wazirabad, Bhagirathi and Chandrawal we stand to gain around 40 MGD of water by year-end. This quantum is significant in meeting the demands of the city and also there will be no more water wastage at the treatment plants,” Mr. Mathur said.

Mr. Mathur said irregular supply of water in several parts of South Delhi, primarily East of Kailash, Greater Kailash and nearby areas, would be resolved with the commissioning of the reservoir. “This reservoir will help in streamlining water distribution even as the other underground reservoirs in the vicinity are being readied.”
