1.78 lakh acres distributed among landless farmers

CHENNAI: A total of 1.78 lakh acres of land has been distributed to 1.51 lakh landless agricultural labourers, Revenue Minister I. Periasamy informed the Assembly on Friday.

“As against 29,074 acres distributed to 51,509 landless poor agriculturalists in five years (2001-2006), so far, from September 17, 2006 to March 17, 2008 (during the last 18 months) as much as 1,78,711.48 acres of land have been developed and assigned to 1,51,264 landless poor agriculturalists,” he said in his opening remarks on the debate on the demands for grants for his department.

So far, the land has been distributed in six phases as part of the scheme of distribution of two acres of treated wasteland to families of landless poor agriculturists, he said. The land for distributing was taken from encroachment-free government poramboke, reassignment of government poramboke lands encroached upon by landless, marginal and small farmers and development/reclamation of patta waste lands owned by small and marginal farmers.
