Naveen calls meet as mercury shoots up

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: As most parts of the State witnessed severe heatwave conditions on Friday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik held a high-level review meeting to find ways to help people cope with the drinking water crisis.

The Capital city experienced a maximum day temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius, the highest day temperature of this season.

The neighbouring city of Cuttack also recorded the season’s highest temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. Many people stayed indoors during the afternoon time and streets wore a deserted look.

An official of the local meteorological centre said that the heatwave condition was likely to prevail over the next two days since two to three centres in coastal Orissa had recorded 40 degree Celsius.

Several interior areas of the districts such as Sundargarh and Jharsuguda have already recorded maximum day temperature of 40 degree Celsius during the past few days.

In the high-level meeting held at the State Secretariat, the Chief Minister ordered that tubewells be dug in all the hamlets, tribal hostels and primary schools that did not have drinking water source.

In areas where people were facing hardship due to high fluoride and iron content in the water, Mr. Patnaik ordered that steps should be taken to provide drinking water under the rural pipe water supply scheme.
