Binayak Rath BHUBANESWAR: A peek into campus of Utkal University (UU), the premier varsity of the State, surely makes one feel that it lacks the vibrancy usually prevails in environ of any institution of higher learning. But things are set to change. The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of UU Binayak Rath has the blueprint in mind. A vision paper prepared by Prof Rath, who is on a deputation from IIT Kanpur, envisages achieving dynamism on the campus. Three days after taking charge of the varsity, Prof Rath, appeared to be confused as to how to start the ‘overhauling’. “Everything is in disarray. There is no semblance enthusiasm among faculties and students. Every move seems to be controlled by bureaucracy here,” the new Vice-Chancellor said. FeedbackProf Rath said as per the feedbacks, he received from faculty members during his first interaction; research activities had never taken off from the campus as finance matter had often held them back. “I want the campus to be driven by faculties. Students too have a larger role in getting the much desired vibrancy. My first priority would be to de-bureaucratize the management of university,” he said. Prof Rath said he would try to tap resources available in Corporate Social Responsibility fund with many industries to bring in the changes. “We are looking forward more industry-academic partnership in the campus. It will enable us move much faster,” he said. He also wanted to improve ‘deplorable’ conditions of hostels and ensure cleanliness in the campus. Prof Rath, who was imparting teachings in economics, said he was interested to carry on with the old job despite heavy administrative burden. “I am trying to put e-learning system in place on the campus. Attempts will also be made to ensure availability of internet connectivity for students. This will make the system more simple,” he said.
