CUTTACK: Cuttack police took at least 25 NCP activists and 50 Congress activists into preventive custody on Friday evening when they opposed Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to the city. Mr. Patnaik was scheduled to attend the annual function of the students’ union of Ravenshaw University as chief guest. He was, however, escorted to the university campus under heavy police cordon. No untoward incident was reported from the campus till late evening. The university campus turned into a fortress following massive security arrangement made by the police. The Congressmen have been opposing his visit to Cuttack alleging that the present government headed by Mr. Patnaik has grossly neglected the Millennium city. After Congress, it was the turn of NCP to pick up the gauntlet against the Chief Minister. The NCP leaders staged a road blockade on the NH-5 at Press Chhak of the city, demanding a CBI enquiry on Gayatri Panda sexual harassment allegations against the former Assembly speaker Maheswar Mohanty. The party also protested the Chief Minister’s Cuttack visit alleging that the CM is shielding the state advocate general who is entangled in a land scam. “We demand a CBI enquiry in Maheswar Mohanty case and as long as the CM does not order for the same, we would oppose his visit to the city”, said the party leader Subhendu Mohanty.
