Manipal: Honorary Director of Manipal Institute of Communication M.V. Kamath said on Friday that cottage industries should be set up in naxal-affected villages to generate employment. He was presiding over the inaugural function of a three-day exhibition and sale of cottage industry products, “Namma Angadi – 2008”, organised by the students of the institute, here. The products on display at the exhibition are manufactured by “Namma Bhoomi”, a non-governmental organisation involved in the activities of working children and a constituent of the “Concerned for Working Children”.
“The products manufactured in these cottage industries reflect our rural culture. These items have a lot of utility. Lack of encouragement has contributed to their decline. It is time to revive cottage industries and provide employment to people in rural areas. This will solve many problems including that of naxalism,” he said. Need to promoteMr. Kamath said Gandhiji had realised the importance of cottage industries and had stressed the need to promote them. Late Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya had done a “wonderful job” in saving many traditional crafts. “There is a fear that these traditional crafts will be lost. The need for a Gandhiji and a Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya is now more than at any other time. Students should take initiative in popularising the products of cottage industries.,” Mr. Kamath said. Director of student affairs in Manipal University Pushpa Kini inaugurated the exhibition. Director of the institute Buroshiva Dasgupta, Shivananda Shetty of Namma Bhoomi, and Head, Brand Augmentation, Ekam, Vanita Pai were present.
