Governor for more ‘Garib Rath’ trains

Hyderabad: Governor N.D. Tiwari on Friday asked the railway authorities to operate more ‘Garib Rath’ trains for the benefit of the poor.

After inaugurating the South Central Railway’s (SCR) 53rd Railway Week celebrations at Rail Kalarang here, Mr. Tiwari advised the railway authorities to improve passenger amenities, particularly toilets in trains and at railway stations.

He congratulated South Central Railway for receiving the Ministry of Railways’ Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant award which was presented in recognition of its overall excellence among the 16 zones in the Indian Railways.

Passenger amenities

SCR General Manager, H.K. Padhee, explaining the achievements of SCR during the financial year 2007-08, said over Rs. 110 crore was spent for providing passenger amenities, the highest outlay ever spent since the inception of the zone in 1966. He assured that the amount for improving passenger amenities would be increased further in the current year.

He said that SCR achieved apportioned earnings of Rs. 6, 830 crore through passenger tickets, freight, parcel, catering and ticket checking facilities, posting a growth of 10 per cent more than last year.

SCR had launched passenger reservation system-cum-unreserved ticketing system facility launched at 138 stations and it would be extended to most of the stations in its jurisdiction soon.

Shields

Later, the Governor as part of the celebrations presented 26 efficiency shields and 114 individual awards to SCR personnel. SCR General manager’s overall best performance shield was presented to Secunderabad division.
