New Coast Guard station to come up

C. Jaishankar

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Coast Guard has decided to set up a station with state-of-the-art berth facilities for operating bigger ships in the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, Inspector General S.P.S. Basra, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East), said the exact location of the station was yet to be finalised.

It has assumed significance in the background of the ongoing conflict between the Government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka.

As of now, three stations function in Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district, Tuticorin and Puducherry under the control of Coast Guard in Chennai. The new station would be bigger than those at Mandapam and Tuticorin.

It was likely to come up between Mandapam and Puducherry off Tamil Nadu. A few locations at Nagapattinam were also being considered.
