Don’t politicise Olympics: Lee

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong cautioned the West on Friday against politicising the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“Journey of harmony”

Addressing a knowledge forum organised here by the London School of Economics, Mr. Lee said: “The Olympics is China’s coming out party, to celebrate its progress and opening up to the world. They sent the Olympic torch overseas in what is described as a “journey of harmony.”

But not surprisingly, China’s opponents see this as a golden opportunity to make their point.”

On the theme of the forum, Mr. Lee said: “Knowledge creation is not a new phenomenon in Asia. The ancient Indian civilisation made significant contributions at the frontiers of knowledge. [And] ancient China was arguably the most technologically advanced society in the world. ”
