CPI warns government

Sandeep Joshi

New Delhi: The Opposition parties on Friday accused the Government of failing to check the rising prices of essential commodities.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said the Left Front would hold protest rallies if the Government failed to take steps to check inflation. “We have shared our concerns with the Government and sent detailed notes on the issue. The Government should take immediate steps to bring down prices,” he added.

Communist Party of India secretary D. Raja said the Government had failed to counter the market forces. “If the Centre fails to tackle inflation, it will pay a political price,” he warned.

Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the failure of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to tame inflation reflected poorly on its economic policies.

However, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said there was no need to panic as prices would soon be brought under control.

Meanwhile Rajya Sabha member Brinda Karat has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene a meeting of all political parties to arrive at a consensus on the Women’s Reservation Bill.

In a letter to Dr. Singh, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member drew his attention to the assurance given in the Rajya Sabha during the reply to the President’s address on March 5 that as soon as Parliament dispersed for recess he would call all political parties for a discussion on the Bill.

“Since the recess period is almost over and no meeting has been held yet, I would request you to kindly call the meeting at the earliest. It hardly needs reiteration that there is a great urgency to the issue,” Ms. Karat said in the letter.
