CHENNAI: Madras Cricket Club (MCC) retained the title in the fifth UCAL-TNTA women’s tennis league, defeating Gandhi Nagar, at the Gandhi Nagar Club here on Friday. The MCC pair of Rushmi Chakravarthi and Nandita Krishnan overcame Sai Jayalakshmi and Preeti Rao (Gandhi Nagar) 6-1, 5-1 in 48 minutes. Sai withdrew after injuring her left ankle while reaching for a shot. MCC started on a wrong note when Rushmi’s serve was broken, but it levelled the scores breaking Preeti’s serve in the second game. Crucial breakThe crucial break, however, for MCC emerged in the fourth game. The second set started in a similar fashion. Gandhi Nagar broke MCC in the first game, but the joy didn’t last long for the host. Ms. Lakshmi Mahadevan, Vice-President, Tamil Nadu Tennis Association, gave away the prizes. The results (final): Rushmi Chakravarthi & Nandita Krishnan (MCC) bt Sai Jayalakshmi & Preeti Rao (Gandhi Nagar) 6-1, 5-1 (concd.). SAI in finalSAI entered the final of the Deccan Chronicle Trophy football tournament at the Nehru Stadium on Friday, defeating Madras Sporting Union (MSU) 3-0 on penalties after the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time. SAI took the lead in the 30th minute when Suresh capitalised on Mohan’s pass, but Mari Kani equalised in the 37th as the teams went into half time 1-1. MSU went ahead in the second half with Reagan scoring in the 52nd minute. SAI midfielder Pradeep restored parity seven minutes later. In the tie-breaker, Elamurugan, Pradeep, and Mohan found the net for SAI, while MSU’s Ajesh, Jayaseelan, and Vinoth Kumar couldn’t convert. SAI goalkeeper Rajesh Kanna was declared the Man of the Match. SAI will play ICF in Sunday’s final. Earlier on Thursday, ICF advanced to the final with a 2-1 victory over Arrows. Jegan Jr. (seventh) and Venkatesan (38th) made the most of defensive lapses to score for ICF. Ravi Moses reduced the margin in the 53rd minute, but the inability of Nigerian striker Ezekiel to convert a chance in each half cost Arrows. Jegan Jr. was declared the Man of the Semifinal. Reddy’s CA tournamentReddy’s Cricket Academy will organise under-10, under-12 and under-14 cricket tournaments (boys) for academies and clubs at Reddy’s ground, Madambakkam, Selaiyur, from April 17 to May 3. The cut-off dates are: U-10: born on or after September 1, 1998; U-12: born on or after September 1, 1996; U-14: born on or after September 1, 1994.
