CBI court extends judicial custody of Nandas

Staff Reporter

Accused of trying to manipulate evidence in missile deal

The Nandas were arrested in Mumbai on March 8

NEW DELHI: A CBI court on Friday extended the judicial custody of arms dealer Suresh Nanda, his son Sanjeev Nanda, chartered accountant Bipin Shah and Deputy Director (Income Tax) Ashutosh Verma up to April 25. All four have been accused of trying to manipulate evidence that could link Suresh Nanda with alleged kickbacks received in the Barak missile deal.

Special CBI Judge I. K. Kochhar sent the four to judicial custody after they were produced before the court following the expiry of 14-day judicial custody.

Earlier, the accused had moved the bail plea before the court which had been rejected on April 5. The court had then said the accused could influence the probe, which was at an initial stage, if they were released on bail. The accused have now approached the Delhi High Court seeking bail. The Nandas and the two other accused were arrested at a five-star hotel in Mumbai on March 8. Following his arrest, the CBI had also allegedly recovered Rs.55 lakh in cash from Shah’s residence.

According to the CBI, Verma, who had raided the Nandas’ residence in connection with non-filing of income tax returns, had allegedly recovered some documents that could have linked Nandas to the kickbacks in the Barak missile deal. The Nandas allegedly wanted those documents to be manipulated and were in the process of arriving at a deal with Verma when they were arrested. The agency had also recorded 94 telephonic conversations among the accused.
