Thumbs up for quota judgment

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: There has been an all-round cheer for the Supreme Court’s historic decision to uphold the 27 per cent quota for the Other Backward Classes in the Central Government institutions of higher learning.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union welcomed the judgment, especially since it came in the wake of “large-scale opposition and hectic lobbying by casteist forces and the corporate lobby with the covert patronage of the political powers that be”.

“Reservation in higher education for students from deprived categories is an essential first step in ensuring social justice. JNUSU is committed to ensure that this judgement is implemented not just in letter, but also in spirit,” said JNUSU president Sandeep Singh. The teaching fraternity also has hailed the decision. “We congratulate the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development on their bold initiative to increase the number of seats. We have been demanding an extension of the base of higher education so that more and more students can get the opportunity to study,” said Aditya Narain Misra, president of the DUTA.

In a statement, the Democratic Teachers’ front welcomed the apex court’s decision to keep the creamy layer within the OBCs out of the ambit of reservation. “We demand that the Union Government puts into place necessary infrastructure ,” said DTF president Sanjaya Kumar Bohidar.
