Belgaum: Noted vocalist and doyenne of Kirana Gharana, Gangubai Hangal, gave a clarion call to the Government and all concerned to strive for sustaining Indian classical and traditional music systems in the best interests of humanity. She was addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the KLE University’s new School of Music here on Saturday evening. Minister of Education of the Republic of Zambia Lungawangwa and Brig. Gen. Gongola, Chancellor of KLE University Prabhakar Kore, Vice-Chancellor Chandarkant Kokate, Registrar P.F. Kotur and musicologist Hayavadan Joshi were present. Ms. Hangal, who showed deep concern over certain “waves” pushing the traditional and classical forms of music, said: “These waves are temporary and would subside soon and our music will prevail once again.” Complimenting KLE University for starting the music school, she called upon similar efforts from other institutions to create a new generation of listeners. If there were no listeners, then there would be no singers or instrumentalists, she said, while reminding the Government of her repeated requests to introduce music as one of the subjects in the school curriculum.
