Entrance fee to the park fixed at Rs.220 for adults

MALAPPURAM: The Kottakunnu Amusement Park set up by the Malappuram Municipality in association with the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) was thrown open to the public on Saturday evening. Inaugurating the park, Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed called upon the civic bodies not to depend solely on the taxes from the public.

“Means of income should be found from various routes, including amusement parks such as this,” he said. The Union Minister suggested setting up of a ropeway at Kottakunnu as part of exploiting the tourism potential of the historic hillock in Malappuram town.

Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty inaugurated the water theme park. He said the amusement park was testimony to collaborative efforts in bringing about development.

Presiding over the function, municipal chairman Kiliyamannil Yakoob claimed that it was the first amusement park in the country to be set up by a municipal body.

M. Ummer, MLA, launched the website of the amusement park.

Presenting a report, municipal secretary P.K. Anees said that the park was set up by the Municipality on five acres of land provided by the District Tourism Promotion Council at a cost of Rs.5 crore.

The construction of the park was completed in less than 14 months since Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan laid the foundation stone in 2007.

The amusement park, the only such in Malappuram district, has two dozen rides that can amuse children and elders alike.

Municipal vice-chairman Veekshanam Mohammed welcomed the gathering. A.P. Anil Kumar, MLA, gave away mementoes to those involved in the construction of the park.

The entrance fee to the park has been fixed at Rs.220 a person. It will be Rs.175 for children between the height of 90 cm and 136 cm. Children or elders below 90 cm height need not pay any fees. Persons above 55 years of age need to pay only Rs.100.
