BHOPAL: Polling for the Lok Sabha by-election from Betul in Madhya Pradesh passed off peacefully on Saturday. According to an Election Commission spokesman here, 27.67 per cent voters had exercised their right to franchise by 1 p.m. The turnout went up to 40 per cent by 4 p.m. and was put at 55 per cent by the end of the day. According to information received from different parts of the constituency, the voter turnout was higher in the rural areas compared to the urban pockets. At one polling station, Khapa Khateda in Amla Tehsil, not a single vote was cast. It is learnt that many male residents of this village have migrated to Maharashtra after several members of a family involved in an incident of violence and murder about three years ago were sentenced to life imprisonment.
