‘Bring poor to cooperatives fold’

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Cooperative Ministers of various States agreed here on Saturday to work out a joint action plan to strengthen the cooperative movement and resolve the common difficulties while spreading out the cooperative activities to hitherto untouched areas.

A national convention of Cooperative Ministers organised here by the Rajasthan Government identified the issues confronting the cooperative movement and highlighted the role of cooperative sector in giving credit to the needy and improving the quality of life in the villages.

Addressing the convention, Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said the cooperative sector in Rajasthan had covered microfinance, insurance, tourism, retail marketing and mobile phones during the past few years. “As many as 24 cooperative supermarkets are presently functioning across the State,” she said.

Highlighting the immense scope for growth of the cooperative sector, Ms. Raje suggested that the cooperative functionaries could work in coordination with the private sector entrepreneurs to extend their activities in the rural areas. She said emphasis should be on attracting the poor to cooperative institutions for their credit needs and save them from moneylenders.
