Bangalore: The Karnataka Dalit Christian Federation (KDCF) has demanded the implementation of the Ranganath Mishra Commission report, which states that Dalit Christians and Muslims should be included in the Scheduled Castes list. Referring to the commission’s 2007 report, at a State-level meeting here on Saturday, Y. Mariswamy, State convener of KDCF said that the commission had called for the deletion of a paragraph in the Constitution which restricts the Scheduled Caste status to Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists, excluding Muslims and Christians. The commission had recommended that the paragraph be “wholly deleted” so as to “de-link Scheduled Caste status from religion” and make the Scheduled Caste “religion-neutral”, Mr. Mariswamy said. “The SC status should be extended to Dalit Christians and Muslims so that they can avail constitutional safeguards such as the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and be eligible for reservation in educational institutes and services,” he said.
