Long overdue: The old bridge at Kuvempu Nagar in Hassan being demolished to make way for a new one. HASSAN: Residents of the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) colony in Kuvempu Nagar here will soon heave a sigh of relief as the City Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to demolish the old bridge and replace it with a new two-way one at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh. A large number of students use this bridge to reach their college in K.R. Puram. The old bridge was constructed in 1990. As the bridge was narrow, there were a number of accidents. During the rainy season, it was very difficult to cross over, as the railing on one side had collapsed when a vehicle once rammed into it. Prakash, a resident of the colony, said this was the only bridge that connected K.R. Puram and other areas. The residents had appealed to the CMC to construct a two-way bridge, but the municipal elections came in the way. Once the elected body took over, it decided to demolish the old bridge. ‘Completion soon’Speaking to The Hindu, councillor Suresh said two bridges had been sanctioned for the KHB colony. “This bridge will be completed in three months’ time after which another one will be built at the other end of the housing colony, connecting it to the Railway Station Road,” he added.
