TIRUCHI: A couple of cancer-related deaths in the recent years among the health staff have triggered the Department of Public Health Services to draft a plan for conduct of intensive health screening camp for doctors and paramedical staff. As a first step towards the initiative, the Department would organise a health check-up camp for all its staff in the first week of May, the Deputy Director of Public Health Services, V. Veerapandiyan, told The Hindu. Focus of the camp would be on screening health workers and medicos for cervical and breast cancer. “Most of the doctors, especially working at primary health centres in remote villages, are the ones who are in need of immediate attention. Most of the medical workers, especially village health nurses, have never got themselves screened during any of the medical camps conducted,” he said. Doctors from private hospitals would be roped in for screening the medicos. In an attempt to make the camp an annual affair, the department has planned to slot in the doctors’ camp during the primary health centre day celebrations, which was to be celebrated from this year. The celebration, to be held between April 21 and May 10, sought to sensitise people to the services of PHCs. “We have planned to personally contribute for the camp without utilising the facilities available for the public. The camp, if organised regularly, would go a long way in keeping up the health of our staff,” Dr. Veerapandiyan hoped.
