Bhubaneswar to host music concerts

Each concert to be dedicated to the popular Oriya poets

It is an effort to popularise the Odissi style

Well-known Odissi singers will perform

BHUBANESWAR: In an effort to popularise and document the traditional Odissi music among the masses, the State-owned Odissi Research Centre (ORC) in collaboration with the Department of Culture has resolved to host a series of music concerts in the city.

ORC sources said that each concert would be dedicated to the songs composed by one of the pioneering and popular Oriya poets including Kabisurya, Dinakrushna, Upendra Bhanja and Gopalkrushna, who had played a pivotal role in popularising Oriya language, literature and music for centuries. Noted singers would be invited to perform the songs, which would be duly documented for the ORC archive, it was learnt.

The concert on Gopalkrushna is scheduled for Saturday evening at the Rabindra Mandap here in which well-known Odissi singers Ramahari Das, Binapani Nayak, Chandramani Lenka, Keshab Rout, Sangeeta Gosain, Lata Ghose, Bijay Kumar Jena, Bharati Jena and Nazia Alam would perform.

‘Odissi Sandhya’

Realising the relevance of hosting exclusive concerts of traditional Odissi music outside the State in order to get classical status for the style as the third distinct music tradition of India after Hindustani and Carnatic music, the department and the ORC have been hosting ‘Odissi Sandhya’ (evening of Odissi music) in major Indian metros.

“We have already put up shows in Chandigarh, New Delhi and Kolkata, which received rave response,” stated ORC chief executive and noted musician Ramahari Das.

The Department of Culture has further launched an annual national festival for Odissi dance, music and percussion instrument of mardal in the capital that would focus on promotion of Orissa’s unique dance and music traditions, Mr. Das hoped.
