Govindacharya for shift towards traditional farming

Correspondent

CUTTACK: Former BJP general secretary K N Govindacharya, who is now national convener of ‘Rashtriya Swabhiman Andolan’, feels that a sharp shift towards traditional agriculture in the country would arrest the rise in inflation and check the surging prices of essential items.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday Mr. Govindacharya, a strong votary against consumerism, said improved storage facility of farm products and a systematic distribution of food grains among the poor and needy people would go a long way in tackling the starvation problem of the country.

“A new Price Commission involving farmers and pressurizing the industries to publish the production and market cost of their products would be the perfect solution to bridge the gap between the rich and poor people of the country,” Mr. Govindacharya, who took a leave from active politics in 2003 to study on impact of globalisation on Indian polity and society, said.

Hesuggested that people’s representatives at grassroots level should be a part of the ‘Electoral College’ to elect the President and Vice President of the country. “Even these representatives (of local self government) should have a say on the election of Rajya Sabha members,” he opined.

Answering a question on controversial Setu Samudram Project, the former BJP leader said the project is ‘unwarranted’. “The project would be hazardous to environment and jeopardise the country’s security. Moreover, the project is going to severely hurt the sentiments of the Hindus,” Mr. Govindacharya said.

The former BJP leader blamed the then NDA government led by Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee for not doing anything to stall the Setu Samudram project. “It’s not the present UPA Government, led by Congress or its allies like CPM are to be blamed for the project.

Even NDA government is equally responsible for the present fiasco,” Mr. Govindacharya said.
