Building rule violations to be publicised

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has directed the Secretary (Local Self- Government) to take steps to publicise details of unauthorised constructions.

Public knowledge of the violations of buildings rules, it is hoped, will help to check continued violations.

The directive has been issued after the State government found out that building activities continue unhindered in several cases even after the municipalities issued notices.

On the Minister’s directives, the authorities are to put up boards indicating the details of the violations under specific provisions of the Kerala Municipal Buildings Rules after the violations are confirmed.

The boards should be of sufficient size so that the people can easily see them. Photographs of the building and the board should be taken and kept.

An official release said that the government proposed to intensify action against unauthorised constructions.

Inspections were to be strengthened at the City Corporation, municipality and panchayat levels.

Notices should be issued against all constructions that were found to violate provisions of the Kerala municipalities Act and action taken on expiry of the notice period.

If the owner was found to be continuing the work after issue of notice, the work should be stopped with the help of the police.

Disciplinary action would be taken against secretaries of local self-governments who failed to take follow up action after issue of notices.
