Spirited protest: Uthandi residents stage a demonstration on East Coast Road on Saturday morning. TAMBARAM: Protesting against the location of an IMFL outlet of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) in their locality, residents of Uthandi village, near Neelankarai, gathered on East Coast Road on Saturday morning and urged the State government to close the outlet or shift it elsewhere. As a result, flow of traffic was disrupted for sometime. The protestors, including members of the local unit of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, said the TASMAC outlet (Shop No. 4081) was located in a public place and the nuisance caused by visitors to the shop was unbearable. Children and women were subjected to harassment and embarrassment by men and youth, who created problems under the influence of alcohol. They charged that even long after the shop was closed for the day, miscreants continued to sell liquor bottles purchased from the shop from a shed nearby. The protestors dispersed only after an assurance that their grievances would be conveyed to senior officials of TASMAC.
