AHMEDABAD: Noted technocrat and National Knowledge Commission chairman Sam Pitroda has expressed reservations about the expansion of educational facilities in Gujarat. Mr. Pitroda, who was on a day’s visit to the State on Saturday, said though much progress had been made in the field of education in Gujarat, his home State, it was far below the level of expectations and the State’s potential. He said the State needed more schools, colleges and vocational institutions. At present, it had only about 370 colleges accommodating just about 10 per cent of the students, but at the present population level, there should be at least 1,500 colleges. For a progressive and developed State like Gujarat, it was not a difficult task to achieve but it required a concerted effort from all sections, he said. Mr. Pitroda also called on Chief Minister Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar and discussed with him the measures required to be taken in the State for expansion of educational facilities, development of information technology sector and other issues. The government secretaries of various departments were also present at Mr. Pitroda’s hour-long discussion with Mr. Modi. Earlier, he also attended the meeting of the governing council of the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Centre here.
