Musharraf’s promise to Colombo on terror

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s military on Saturday claimed that at least 11 LTTE cadres were killed and several others injured in continued fighting in the north.

According to a Defence Ministry statement, in the Jaffna theatre troops targeted a LTTE gun position in Nagarkovil, killing four Tigers. Another four were reportedly killed in a fresh army attack in Muhamalai.

In the Wanni theatre, troops killed two LTTE cadres in Vedamakulam. In a separate confrontation took place in Vinayakankulam, troops confirmed that two Tiger cadres were killed. In Mannar, army snipers deployed in Adampan and Thirukethiswaram areas gunned down four LTTE cadres.

In Welioya, troops killed two LTTE cadres. One soldier was injured in the incident.

An LTTE cadre was killed in a separate confrontation in the same area and two army soldiers injured in a clash. Two LTTE cadres were wounded when troops ambushed a LTTE squad in Kiriibbabwewa. Three terrorists were either killed or wounded in a separate clash.

Troops in Andankulam attacked and captured two LTTE trenches. Sixty-three anti personnel mines, 2 trapped 81mm mortar bombs, and 2 T-56 magazines were found.

In another development, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has told President Mahinda Rajapaksa that Islamabad would continue to back Colombo in its fight against terrorism.

Despite recent changes in the Pakistani government, there would be no change in the country’s attitude towards terrorism in Sri Lanka, General (retd.) Musharraf told Mr. Rajapaksa at a meeting in Sanya in Hainang Island.

Mr. Rajapaksa is in China to participate in the Boao Forum along with General Musharraf.

An official statement here said that General Musharraf, during the discussions, stressed on the need to expand the scope of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries. The two leaders exchanged views on the current situation.
