NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old woman was shot at and injured in a daylight robbery at Adarsh Nagar here on Saturday. Two of the accused have been arrested and the stolen goods recovered.

According to the police, four young men armed with a country-made pistol and knife forced their way into the residence of a businessman, Rajkumar Sharma, around 12 noon. They had followed his teenaged daughter to the house while she was returning from a nearby market. The robbers bolted the door from inside and took the girl and her mother Monika Sharma hostage at gunpoint. They then went about ransacking the house looking for cash and jewellery and threatened the women to hand over the keys of the cupboard.

Refusing to give in to their demand, Monika entered into a scuffle with the robbers and was shot at by one of them. The bullet grazed her arm causing a minor injury. The accused than attacked her with a knife and stabbed her on the neck.

“Hearing the girl’s screams for help, her father, who owns a shop close to the house, and some neighbours rushed to their help. However, by the time they reached the spot, the four had managed to flee with whatever they could lay their hands on,” said a neighbour, Vijay Jindal, president of a non-government organisation, Society for Securing Justice.

However, the robbers soon ran short of luck and bumped into a police patrol team coming from the opposite direction. One of the accused, Dharmender, was arrested on the spot while the three others managed to escape. One of the remaining three, Abdul Kadir, a former domestic help of the family, was subsequently arrested at the instance of Dharmender. The police have registered a case and launched a massive hunt for the two accused still at large. Meanwhile, Monika Sharma has been admitted to Parnami Orthopaedic Hospital in Azadpur and is said to be out of danger.
