More IIT hopefuls this time around

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Nearly 3.2 lakh students will appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE 2008) to be held across the country on Sunday for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology.

Compared to last year, there has been an increase of about 70,000 applicants.

The test will be held at 600 centres, divided into seven zones, across the country, sources said. Students will be vying with one another for more than 4,000 seats across all disciplines, according to current statistics.

These numbers may change as a result of the three-phase expansion according to the new reservation policy.

Following the recent Supreme Court decision to implement 27 per cent quota in all Central educational institutions including the IITs, those who appear for the JEE are confused regarding the possible changes in the evaluation system.

The IIT-JEE score will be used as a benchmark for admissions to the seven IITs located in Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Chennai, Bombay, Roorkee and Guwahati.

The examination structure will be the same as in 2007 and negative marking will be retained.

Pattern

The proposed pattern of JEE, coordinated by IIT Roorkee this time, would test the students for six hours with two question papers each comprising questions in Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
