NEW DELHI: A court here has sentenced a man, convicted of criminally assaulting a minor girl in the presence of her family three years ago, to ten years’ rigorous imprisonment. Additional Sessions Judge D. K. Sharma also slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 on Santosh. In case of failure to pay the fine, the 26-year-old convict would have to undergo an additional six months’ imprisonment, the court said. The court observed that the crime was a result of the convict having a perverse mind. It said a rapist degrades and defiles the soul of a helpless female and the impact is much more when such an offence is committed in the presence of her family. The court had held Santosh guilty under Sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) of the Indian Penal Code. According to the prosecution, on September 24, 2004, Santosh had entered the house of the victim at Mukherjee Nagar in North-West Delhi and criminally assaulted the girl.
