MADURAI: Notwithstanding the shift of Tamil New Year to the first day of the “Thai” month (Pongal) by the State Government, people thronged the temples here on Sunday and offered prayers. Following a consensus among a group of 500 Tamil scholars at a conclave, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi introduced a bill in January declaring the first day of the “Thai” month (Pongal) as the Tamil New Year Day. Hitherto, the Tamil New Year Day was celebrated on the first day of the Tamil month, ‘Chithirai,’ which fell on Sunday this year. A large number of devotees offered prayers in the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here. The district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party also celebrated Sunday as the Tamil New Year Day. Party cadres garlanded the statue of Tamilannai here.
