BHUBANESWAR: Founder of the KIIT University Achyut Samant emerged as the most popular Oriya in the ETV-Oriya conducted state-wide “Priya Oriya-2007” poll. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and popular singer Bhikari Bal were the winners of the title that was instituted by the television channel three years ago. The first phase of the poll was taken up in all the 30 districts of the State through secret ballot system conducted by mobile teams of the TV channel. Of the 10 successful personalities from different fields, five were finally short-listed for the final poll. They were cine actor Bijay Mohanty, academician Achyut Samant, social worker Tulasi Munda, sand sculptor Sudarshan Patnaik and chess player Padmini Rout. Mr. Samant emerged as the topper in the test that was taken up through e-mail, SMS and telephone calls. Governor M.C. Bhandare conferred the trophy to Mr.Samant in a special function hosted by the TV channel at the Exhibition Ground here on Sunday evening. He greeted the people on the Oriya new year’s day. The award presentation ceremony was followed by a colourful cultural extravaganza.
