BERHAMPUR: Police proved to be catalyst to unite two love birds from different communities and also averted possibilities of a communal clash at Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district. I. Ravana (24) and Amida Begum (20) married each other on Saturday only due to intervention of the personnel of the Paralakhemundi police station. Both of them were from the Bakali Street of the town. Owning to religious differences, parents of both were opposed to their marriage. Amida’s father S. Madina had fixed up his daughter’s marriage with a youth of his own community. It led Amida take a drastic step and she attempted suicide by jumping into a well on Friday night. It irked her relatives further. And a communal clash between their families was almost ready when a police team led by inspector in charge of Paralakhmundi police station, B.G. Mohanty reached the spot. The police team prevented the communal clash and rescued the girl. Amida and Ravana threatened that they would commit suicide if they were not married despite intervention of police officials. As both the boy and the girl were of marriageable age the police team provided them security till they were married before notary public and at a local Shiva temple in the presence of dignitaries of the town. With the help of senior citizens attempts are being made by the policemen to make the parents accept the marriage.
