GULBARGA: The Government has decided to bring major district roads (MDRs) under the private maintenance model. Official sources said here on Sunday that the Government had taken into consideration the failure on the part of some contractors to fulfil the terms of the agreement in maintaining the State highways. It had strengthened the clauses pertaining to punitive action against those who fail to carry out maintenance of the MDRs, they said. The contract for maintenance of a particular stretch would now be one year instead of the three years as it was in the case of State highways. The stretch of MDRs given for private maintenance to a particular contractor would be limited since it would enable officials of the Public Works Department to monitor the progress of maintenance and release funds. The main criteria for allotting maintenance work would remain the same. The proposal containing the list of the MDRs to be taken up for private maintenance was ready, but election code of conduct has come in the way of making a notification. The proposal will be placed before the new Government.
