PUDUCHERRY: Early detection, early referral and early institution of treatment will help in preventing Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD), Nephrologist, Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute (IGGGH & PGI) N. Murugesan said on Sunday.

Delivering a lecture on “C.K.D-The story of a millionaire” at the 17th Continuing Medical Education Programme of St. Joseph’s Hospital (Cluny), he spoke on the need for early detection to prevent CKD.

A millionaire could turn a pauper due to CKD as treatment, dialysis and kidney transplantation were expensive for the patients. A minimum of Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 6,000 had to be spent every month towards dialysis, he said.

But CKD was preventable if detected early. Urine output less than five ml every day meant that the kidney was failing. Regular monitoring of urine output and treatment could put kidney diseases at bay, he added.

Simple tests such as urine for protein, blood test for sugar and creatinine estimation, blood pressure were the effective methods of early detection, thereby preventing development of CKD, Dr. Murugesan said.

According to estimates, 90 per cent of the patients with CKD were unaware of the disease. Diabetes and hypertension also led to CKD. If the blood sugar levels were managed and monitored properly, the disease could be prevented.

He stressed the need for early detection, referral and treatment for prevention of CKD.

Chief Executive Officer of the hospital H. Ranganath spoke on the occasion.
