JD(S) has lost hope of a good show: Kharge

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) M. Mallikarjun Kharge has said that Janata Dal (S) leader H.D. Deve Gowda has conceded defeat even before the polling by saying that around 30 seats was enough for his party to play a crucial role in the formation of the next government.

Talking to presspersons here on Sunday, Mr. Kharge said Mr. Deve Gowda had lost hope of winning a sizable number of seats and hence Mr. Deve Gowda was making such statements.

Party confident

Mr. Kharge exuded confidence that the Congress would get a simple majority and it would form the government in the State.

Merit, seniority, capability and loyalty to party were some of the criteria adopted to select candidates.

To a question, he said that the candidates’ list had not yet been finalised and that it would be announced in two phases in another week. The screening committee of the party was expected to meet in Bangalore on Monday, he said.

Mr. Kharge made it clear that loyal and senior workers would not be ignored while distributing ticket, and said that if newcomers had to be accommodated, senior party workers of the region would be taken into confidence.

Charge rejected

The KPCC chief also rejected the remarks of H.D. Kumaraswamy, Janata Dal (S) leader and former Chief Minister, that the Congress had copied other parties in Tamil Nadu and other States while preparing the party’s manifesto.

Mr. Kharge asked Mr. Kumaraswamy whether giving rice at Rs. 2 a kg to the poor was wrong and said that the Congress decision to distribute television sets to the poor people was to enable them to keep abreast of the day-to-day happenings around the world.
