Thiruvalluvar statue to be shifted

J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI: The statue of saint and Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar installed at West Block in R.K. Puram would soon be shifted to the Delhi Tamil Sangam premises. An order to this effect was passed by the sub-divisional magistrate on Friday on an application by the Sangam.

The statue was originally installed in 1975 in a corner of open land inside the West Block. After a compound wall was erected around the West Block, the statue had gone out of public view and it had become unattended for maintenance purposes.

The Sangam, in its application, sought permission to shift the statue from its existing place to its own premises.

No maintenance

The order by SDM I. Vishwendra said: “The statue has got isolated because of lack of maintenance and construction of boundary wall and a latrine near it. The Sangam has represented that because of the stench emanating from the toilet, either the statue be shifted from the present place to the premises of the Delhi Tamil Sangam or the toilet be demolished.”

It said: “Demolition of the toilet block will affect the availability of the community infrastructure used by slum dwellers and hence its demolition shall not be carried out.”

Within 15 days

The SDM ordered the shifting of the statue in 15 days without causing any damage to any part of statue including the foundation stone with the names of dignitaries installing it intact. He directed that the statue should be properly maintained by the Sangam and cost of shifting to be borne by the Sangam.

CM thanked

The Delhi Tamil Sangam president and secretary, M.N. Krishnamani and R. Mukunthan, thanked Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for her efforts in fulfilling the demands of the Tamil population.
