Plan afoot for a comfortable Delhi summer

Staff Reporter

Centre assures to provide additional electricity to reduce power cuts in the Capital

Delhi to get regular supply of 200 MW of power from the DVC from May

Centre may increase Delhi’s power share from 22 to 40 per cent from un-allocated power reserve

NEW DELHI: The Centre has assured that it would provide additional power to Delhi to meet its demand-supply gap during the summer months, thereby ensuring that the Capital city does not undergo long power cuts during the hot season.

This was disclosed by Union Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh during a meeting with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday. In the presence of Power Minister A.K. Walia, Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, Power Secretary Rajendra Kumar and senior officers of Delhi Transco Limited, Mr. Ramesh said Delhi would start getting a regular supply of 200 MW of power from the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) from May and this would considerably address the demand-supply gap.

The Minister also stated that his Ministry would seriously consider increasing Delhi’s share from last year’s 22 per cent to 40 per cent from un-allocated power reserve as meeting the requirement of Delhi was very essential. Mr. Ramesh said all efforts would be made to ensure that the citizens of Delhi do not suffer due to load shedding. Mr. Ramesh also expressed confidence that Delhi’s own generation would go up and it would become a power-surplus and a self-reliant State.

The Delhi leaders and officials apprised Mr. Ramesh about Delhi ’s power generation plans. They said Delhi ’s own generation and expected supply together would touch 9,000 MW within the next four years against present generation of around 3,200 MW. Delhi has tied up with DVC for supply of around 2,500 MW by 2011-12.

Gas-based plant

Apart from this a 1,500 MW gas-based plant at Bawana, 750 MW gas-based plant at Bamnauli and 108 MW NDPL plant would be commissioned within the next two-and-a-half years.

In addition to this Delhi would also get 750 MW share from NTPC Jhajjar Aravali Project and another 980 MW dedicated supply from Dadri Power Station. Ms. Dikshit on her part expressed the hope that the Union Power Ministry would continue to render substantial contribution in making the life of Delhiites more comfortable.
