NEW DELHI: Amid much fanfare, the second Dilli Haat in the Capital was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at Pitampura on Sunday. Developed over an area of 7.2 acre at a cost of Rs.31.35 crore, Ms. Dikshit said the new venue would showcase the country’s craft and cultural tradition, while bringing crafts-persons directly in contact with clientele from all over the country.

The Chief Minister said Dilli Haat was a testimony to the fact that despite modernity and its aggressive onslaught, many traditional craft skills have survived and have evolved new parameters of aesthetic and commercial value. She said connectivity of the Pitampura Dilli Haat with Delhi metro would make it a purposeful place where people would be able to enjoy comfortable and hassle-free shopping.

More spacious than the Dilli Haat at INA market, the new Pitampura Haat has 108 craft stalls, a big amphitheatre, more food kiosks, an air-conditioned restaurant and conference room with parking for 400 vehicles. Ms. Dikshit said Pitampura Dilli Haat has been developed with a number of eco-friendly features and is fully disabled-friendly.

Tourism Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely reiterated the best features of the Haat and urged the people of Delhi to visit it in larger numbers during leisure time.

He informed that the things at Dilli Haat are priced reasonably and a common man can afford to visit the place any time. He further informed that the Haat recycles the waster water through a sewage treatment plant and effluent from the kitchens and toilets would treated and used in flushing and irrigation thereby meeting its daily requirement of water to some extent.

Meanwhile, former Union Minister Vijay Goel along with Bharatiya Janata Party workers was detained by the police while demonstrating against price rise during inauguration of the Dilli Haat. “The Chief Minister has not done anything to check the rise in prices but has sufficient time to inaugurate social and cultural programme,” he charged.
