NEW DELHI: In view of the upcoming Assembly elections later this year, the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to allow senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi members, including Mayor Arti Mehra, to continue in their posts for another year. The decision will also immunise Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta and Leader of the House Subhash Arya, besides the heads of various other Zonal committees from relinquishing their posts after their annual term ends later this month. ‘Rejuvenate workers’In a statement, BJP Delhi president Harsh Vardhan said the step was being taken in view of the Assembly elections so that the party could channelise all its forces towards that end. “The BJP has implemented several beneficial schemes through the MCD and increased the civic body’s efficiency as well supplemented the revenue generated. We are allowing the leaders to continue for the current year so they can continue their good work,” he added. Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said the decision to re-nominate BJP leaders in the civic body was “performance-based” and would provide them more time to implement beneficial policies for the citizens of the Capital. “This would also allow for a single-minded focus on the Assembly elections. This is a type of status quo that would enable us to continue working the way we did in the first year of our term,” he added. Mr. Gupta also said election to the post of Mayor would continue as scheduled but would be a mere formality as the party had already decided that Ms. Mehra was supposed to continue in her position.
