Rights panel files case against priest

Special Correspondent

Kozhikode: The State Human Right Commission has filed a case against the Executive Engineer (PWD), Mananthavadi, and a priest of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church in Mananthavadi in connection with an incident in which two youths were electrocuted on April 10.

The tragedy happened while an arch was being erected for the consecrating ceremony of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church.

The youngsters who were electrocuted were Ozhakkodi Periyanthara Rajesh, 32, and Babeesh, 27.

NGO submits case

The case was filed by S. Varghese, Member of the State Human Right Commission, on the basis of a complaint submitted by Solidarity, an NGO in Mananthavadi, and Rajappan, the father of Rajesh, one of the victims.

Seeks panel report

The Commission has also sought the report of an expert committee appointed by the government to enquire into what has come to be known as the “Padinjarathara canal incident.”

In this incident, two workers were buried alive while engaged in constructing the canal.

The Commission, in its order, asked the contractor who was executing the work on the canal to give a detailed report about the financial help he gave to the dependents of those killed.

Four cases settled

At its sitting held at the Government Rest House in Kalpetta on Friday, the Commission settled four out of the 24 cases it examined.
