Heavy rush at Sabarimala

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: Hundreds of devotees thronged the Lord Ayyappa Temple in Sabarimala on Sunday, the eve of Vishu, to have the auspicious ‘Vishukkani’ on Monday morning.

Ayyappa devotees were found trekking the Neelimala and Appachimedu hills braving the heavy downpour in the afternoon. They covered the sacred bundle (Irumudikettu) on the head with a plastic sheet while climbing the hills.

Travancore Devaswom Board president C.K. Gupthan and members, P. Narayanan and P.K. Sumathikutty Amma, reached the Pampa on the foothills in the afternoon. The Special Commissioner appointed by the Kerala High Court, M. Rajendran Nair, Devaswom Commissioner, C.G. Satdhidanandan, and Devaswom Secretary, Suresh Jeevan, are camping at Sannidhanam to monitor the arrangements for the Vishu festival. The ‘Vishukkani’ at the Ayyappa shrine will be from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Monday, according to Executive Officer A.C. Godavarma.

He said the devaswom had maintained sufficient stock of ‘aravana’ and ‘appam’ to meet requirements during Vishu.
